Nairobi (Reuters) - The leader of a regional maritime group said on Monday that the organization was investigating reports that Somali pirates have hijacked a cruise ship which climbed three British nationals in the Indian Ocean.
Andrew Mwangura, coordinator of the East African Seafarers Assistance Programme, told Reuters that his group had been told that cruise ships has climbed by pirates near the Seychelles.
"We have not received information regarding the name of the cruise ship and we also do not know the sex of its crew. But we're trying to get clarification about this statement - that we received (Monday) night," he said.
The organization insists the group is working to obtain an explanation of the different reports that the yacht was hijacked near the Seychelles, or near Lamu, off the coast of Kenya, near Brava, along the coastline of southern Somalia, said Mwangura.
Somalia has no functioning central government for almost 20 years and filled with weapons. The chaos on the ground has allowed pirates mushrooming in the strategic sea off its coast, which connects Europe with Africa and Asia.
